How it works

Step by step, without the jargon.

Choose your cover

You select a sum insured amount and, for family floater plans, decide which family members the policy should protect.

Understand the waiting periods

Most policies apply an initial waiting period, and specific conditions carry longer waiting periods before they are covered.

Pay the premium

The premium depends on age, sum insured, the members covered and the insurer’s own underwriting decision.

Claim when needed

Cashless treatment is available at network hospitals, subject to network availability and the insurer’s approval. Reimbursement applies in other cases as per policy terms.

Who might consider it

  • Individuals and families who want a financial cushion against hospital bills
  • Young earners building their first protection cover
  • Parents planning cover for children and dependent parents
  • Anyone who may lose employer-provided cover on a job change

Key benefits to look for

  • Helps meet hospitalisation costs such as room, ICU, surgery and medicines
  • Family floater options cover multiple members under one sum insured
  • Cashless treatment at network hospitals, subject to approval
  • Tax benefits may apply under the prevailing income tax provisions

Important limitations to understand

These points appear in most policies of this type. The exact wording, limits and waiting periods vary by insurer and by plan.

  • Waiting periods apply before certain illnesses and treatments are covered
  • Pre-existing diseases are usually covered only after a defined waiting period
  • Room-category limits, sub-limits and co-payment clauses may apply
  • Cosmetic procedures, self-inflicted injuries and non-medical items are typically excluded
  • Cashless facility depends on the hospital being inside the insurer’s network

Questions

Health Insurance — frequently asked

Is cashless treatment always available?
No. Cashless treatment is available only at hospitals inside the insurer’s network and only when the insurer approves the request. At other hospitals you typically pay first and claim reimbursement as per policy terms.
What is a family floater plan?
A family floater shares one sum insured among the members listed on the policy. It can be cost-effective for a young family, but the shared cover can be exhausted if several members need treatment in the same year.
Will my existing illnesses be covered immediately?
Usually not. Pre-existing conditions are generally covered only after the waiting period stated in the policy, provided they were disclosed correctly at the time of purchase.
Does the premium stay the same every year?
Health insurance premiums are typically reviewed by the insurer with age and with claim experience, so the amount can change at renewal.
